The Heat Pump Assessment Process

On the day a surveyor will capture information about your home: heating system, how your home is constructed and how well it retains heat. The renewable heating assessment will take 1-3 hours, depending on the size of your home.

The surveyor will complete a room-by-room heat loss survey. This calculates how much energy is needed to keep each space warm on the coldest days. The room’s size and function, insulation and windows are all considered. This is crucial for designing an efficient low-temperature heating system.

You and the surveyor will identify a good location for the outdoor unit and hot water cylinder. This is about matching your preferences with the rules around noise, planning permission, and technical considerations.

The surveyor will also look for potential issues like electrical supply problems, site access difficulties, or radiators in poor condition, for example. This will inform the heat pump installation planning, should your report recommend you go ahead.

Factors that are considered in a heat pump assessment:

  • How your home is constructed and how well it retains heat
  • Your home’s insulation, ventilation and windows
  • Space for the heat pump machine and any noise, planning permission and technical factors
  • Site access difficulties
  • Any electrical supply issues
  • Radiator condition

As a minimum, the assessment report should recommend the most suitable heat pump type and size for your home. It will estimate costs for the installation and any necessary upgrades to radiators. Advice on what to do next, including connecting you with recommended installers working in your area.

The assessment may also include on-going support throughout the buying and installation process. Learn more about what our service providers offer. Got a question about Heat Pumps? Ask the professionals on our forum today!

Alternative option: Retrofit Plans

If you want help deciding what energy improvements to make or want expert advice on insulation measures, then consider a Retrofit Plan instead. Retrofit Plans provide advice on all aspects of home energy. That should include your heating system but it’s typically only light touch advice.
