Working in partnership with Windmill Hill City Farm

We partnered with Windmill Hill City Farm to host two Home Energy Drop-In sessions for South Bristol residents.

The farm is a well-used community space, with a busy café and families coming and going throughout the day. Holding the sessions there meant people could stop for a conversation while they were already out. Across the two sessions, we spoke to a steady flow of people who wanted clear, impartial advice about their homes.

What the conversations told us about South Bristol homes

One clear pattern emerged: damp and condensation are still front of mind for many households in South Bristol.

That’s not surprising. Much of the local housing stock is Victorian terrace or early 20th-century brick construction. These homes were built to breathe. Over time, they’ve been insulated, sealed up, extended and adapted for modern living. When ventilation doesn’t keep pace with those changes, moisture builds up.

Several people described wiping condensation from windows each morning. Others were managing mould that keeps returning, despite regular cleaning. In many cases, the question wasn’t just “how do I fix this?” but “why is this happening in the first place?”

There’s a growing awareness that comfort, ventilation and heating all need to work together. People are starting to look beyond quick fixes and think about their homes as whole systems.

Planning upgrades properly

Heat pumps and solar panels came up regularly, often in the context of wider renovation plans.

Most people weren’t looking for a quick answer. They wanted to understand whether these systems would suit their type of property and what should happen first.

The conversations often came back to order. Sorting out damp and ventilation whilst adding insulation. Understanding how the building performs before changing the heating system. Thinking about how everything works together, rather than adding one measure at a time.

Making use of free impartial expert advice

Some residents booked follow-up support. Others left with clearer next steps. For many, it was simply about having the space to talk it through and sense-check their plans.
