Overview

Hemma and her partner Tim embarked on a comprehensive renovation project at Hillside Road, guided by advice from Futureproof received in 2021. The primary goal was to make their house more sustainable, and energy-efficient, and eventually transition it off-grid and away from fossil fuels. The project included the installation of an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) and involved extensive DIY efforts, including, underfloor heating, new windows, and additional insulation.

Hemma and Tim, the homeowners, took an active role in the renovation, with Tim, a stonemason, contributing significantly to the project.

Background

Looking to increase their comfort, reduce energy bills, and become more environmentally sustainable, Hemma and Tim began by addressing the poor fabric of their home.

The renovation involved a complete overhaul of the downstairs and included the addition of insulation to the ground floor, new windows, and the removal of dividing walls.

Hemma said, “Our ultimate vision would be to incorporate solar panels in the future and transition the house off-grid.”

The project had a budget of £30,000, with a significant portion allocated to the £13,000 air source heat pump system, which included £3,000 to the SunAmp thermal store, both essential components of the retrofit. £7,000 towards the cost of the heat pump was contributed from the ECO3 Scheme.

Assessment

Jenna from Futureproof conducted a shallow retrofit plan, examining the existing energy performance certificate (EPC) and floor plan. She advised on the feasibility of a heat pump and the type of underfloor heating that would work best. The assessment identified challenges related to the existing air gap, leading to recommendations for suitable installers.

The Challenge

The primary challenge arose from difficulties with the chosen installers. An initial quote from one installer suggested an oversized heat pump, but Hemma challenged this, based on her research and the advice she had received. Hemma ultimately opted for a lower output, but higher-spec Vaillant heat pump and SunAmp thermal store, recommended by a different installer. The SunAmp thermal store is 3 times smaller than a standard water tank which addressed Hemma and Tim’s space constraints.

The installer’s performance was subpar throughout the installation and beyond, with issues ranging from missed appointments to persistent leaks and water hammer problems, leading to a dispute lasting approximately 2 years.

Hemma also faced difficulties obtaining comprehensive documentation and information from the installer to address her complaint. After seeking assistance from the regulatory body MCS, and further repairs by the installer, Hemma is now satisfied that the system is functioning correctly.

Results

Despite the challenges, Hemma and Tim’s renovated home is now more comfortable in both summer and winter and their energy consumption has reduced dramatically, thanks to the improved fabric (new windows and floor insulation) and combination of the heat pump and underfloor heating. The couple now use only 15 kWh per day in winter and 6 kWh in summer. This is a 68% reduction on their previous usage, improving their EPC rating from a 66D to a 78C*.

The Vaillant heat pump and SunAmp thermal store have proven effective, although communication challenges persist in explaining the system to other heating engineers.

The project’s long-term goals include exploring options for additional energy efficiency measures, such as the installation of solar panels.

This case study showcases the complexities and challenges associated with retrofitting and sustainable home renovations, emphasising the importance of thorough assessments, informed decision-making, and diligent oversight of contractors for a successful outcome.
