What are the Residential Retrofit Standards?
From 31st October 2024, industry professionals should follow the following criteria:
- Ensure those working with them and for them have the correct and valid credentials to do so
- Understand the client needs and budget and clearly communicate retrofit installation details
- Keep the client abreast of project progress and legal constraints
- Give thorough assessments to identify concerns (including moisture issues and structural problems)
- Competently install energy-saving measures, such as insulation, efficient heating/cooling systems, ventilation, and renewable energy technologies
- Be able to adapt retrofit knowledge to each specific house type
- Follow national and local laws, building regulations and energy standards
- Follow all health & safety regulations, including proper use of equipment
Why do we have the standards?
The standards are there to set a clear framework for trade professionals working on retrofitting residential properties to ensure energy efficiency, carbon reduction and improved occupant wellbeing. The standards aim to establish high-quality installations and align all retrofit efforts with UK climate goals.
Who makes the standards?
The standards in the Residential Retrofit Standard are set and overseen by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).
