Retrofit West vouchers cover 50% of the cost of a home energy assessment, up to a maximum saving of £400, and you can apply for one until 31 December 2026. Once you receive a voucher you have six weeks to book and use it.

How has the scheme helped homeowners so far?

Since the voucher scheme’s start in September 2023, Retrofit West have put £188,167 into subsidising home energy assessments, partly funding well over 1000 surveys for homeowners across the West of England.

Those assessments have taken place across Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, and South Gloucestershire, in flats, terraces, semis and solid walled Victorian houses. The aim of the scheme is to take cost out of the way of that first step, so that more households can find out what their home actually needs before spending money on it.

Retrofit West is a not-for-profit Community Interest Company, founded by the Centre for Sustainable Energy and funded by the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority. We do not sell installations and we take no commission from anyone who does, so the assessment tells you what your home needs rather than what somebody has to sell.

What home energy assessments can I use a voucher for?

Vouchers can be used for a variety of different assessments, each carried out by a specialist provider. You can see the full list here. They answer different questions about a home, so which one suits you depends on what you are trying to find out.

Which assessment should I choose?

Choose the assessment that matches the question you are trying to answer about your home.

A thermal imaging survey is the most direct way to see heat loss. The CHEESE Project visits on a cold day and uses an infrared camera to show exactly where warmth is escaping, which often uncovers gaps people were not expecting. It is particularly useful in older properties where draughts and cold spots are hard to trace. Due to it needing to be cold, thermal imaging surveys are available roughly between October and March.

A Home Energy Efficiency Plan is the fullest picture of the upgrades that would work in your home. A qualified retrofit assessor from Retrofit West surveys the property and produces a written plan covering what could be improved, roughly what it will cost, and how the improvements fit together. If you want one document to work from over the next few years, this is it.

A heat pump assessment answers a specific question. Heat Geek looks at whether a heat pump would perform well in your particular home, and what would need to change first. It is worth doing before you approach installers, so you are having an informed conversation rather than a sales one.

Homeowners are allowed to use a max of 2 vouchers.

How long is the voucher valid, and when do applications close?

Vouchers expire six weeks after they are issued, and applications are open until 31 December 2026. Book your assessment once you have your voucher rather than saving it for later.

Your six weeks are honoured in full whenever you apply, so a voucher issued in late December can still be used into the new year.

How do I get a voucher?

Apply through the Retrofit West website, and we will confirm your eligibility and issue the voucher.
